As anticipated, this became a lively discussion about the importance, or lack
thereof, of association with the ALA. When I said I am first and foremost a
librarian, I did not mean to imply that I am not a teacher. So many library media
specialists work hard to be accepted as an equal part of the faculty. But, one
cannot teach what one does not know. If there a lack of librarianship -- the true
knowledge of library science, we will indeed be obsolete, or relegated to
technology positions. Ours is not a trade, but a profession. In fact, we are
fortunate to have feet in two professions. If we try to stand on just one foot,
and we are doomed -- and so are our students.
