Re Principals -
Principals need to be approached in a systematic, planned way. Do you
have short (20min) schedule meetings with your principal on a quarterly
basis? Do you provide a short, executive summary of the learning
outputs of the library and information program to the principal? Do you
discuss, in a positive way, the successes, opportunities, and concerns
and issues? Do you put the principal in a position to succeed?
I'm sure there are a few principals who are true non-supporters (or even
"monsters"), but they too have plenty on their plates. The vast majority
DON'T purposely stick it to the librarian - they need you to approach
things in a planned, systematic way and to make the connection as to how
the library and information program directly meets the goals and
objectives of the school.
Please don't respond with "I don't have time" or "he/she has no time" or
other reasons why this can't be done. Timewise, this is one of the very
top priorities. Use your creative talents to figure out how to make
this happen!
