I've been down this road before, but one of my disagreements with ALA
is their continued insistence that the entry level degree for a
"Librarian", whether in a school or public library setting is a
Masters degree from an ALA accredited school. It does not matter
what the undergraduate degree taught, just the Masters program.
In my mind, a broad-based (read as LIberal Arts) undergraduate
program that provides a wide scope of knowledge, with a major in
Librarianship might produce better prepared librarians than the
current method that could be turning out people who know how to run a
library, but not have the background information needed to
successfully help patrons. The accreditation of the program should
continue, in order to assure quality, but how do they expect to
continue attracting students wanting to be librarians when an entry
level Masters Degree, with the associated school loans for many
students, will qualify one for a job that will, in some locations,
earn a low enough salary to qualify for food stamps. Dedication will
carry one just do far, but will not pay the bills.
