We have a district wide process for a book or other library material to undergo
reevaluation. (We have about 160 schools in the district). The person making the
complaint must submit a written form stating the objection to the material with
specifics. Then, a committee is formed. After reading the book, the committee meets
and determines the status of the book. For example, a book such as A Child Called
"It" by Dave Pelzer could be deemed not acceptable for elementary, parental
permission only for middle school, and open shelf for high school. (Many books do
go through the process, and remain open shelf at all levels.)
Here are the questions - does your district have a similar policy/ procedure? If
so, is there a process for reviewing the book later (say in 5 or 10 years) and
possibly changing the status? We do not have one. Our district has books from the
1980's on the list for parental permission that would now be considered relatively
mild. Additionally, does your district have a maximum number of times a book can be
put under reevaluation in a certain time period? We don't, and a few years ago one
or another Harry Potter book would be undergoing reevaluation.
Some media specialists in our district would like to make changes. Any information
you can provide about how your district handles these matters will be helpful.
Please respond directly to me, and I will post a hit if other people are interested.
Thanks,
