I am in a large district, so I am used to many ways of performing these tasks. I'm
a more laid-back librarian. My focus is on the students. I have developed great
relationships over the years, and I believe that students and parents feel my
support when they want to know more about what is good or interesting to read. I
call it my "face-time." That means that my shelves are rarely in true order, and I
don't worry about it. I do inventory every year, and usually mark about 40 things
lost. Half of those turn up over time and I just don't worry about the rest. In
fact the only thing I do worry about is the budget each year. I need a strong
budget to keep the collection fresh. I spend a lot of time on collection
development and that includes my free time, too. I read lots of books, reviews and
professional journals/websites.

more inclined to let go of some of the more traditional collection
activities in favor of more interacting with students when
prioritizing must be done. I don't want to see myself as slavishly
connected to the traditional activities of a librarian (along with
the negative stereotypical shushing and book protecting)but Jill made
me think that perhaps I am going too far in that direction and more
time spent on book evaluating, cataloging, shelving, would be better
for my students than what I am offering now.
I would love to see a respectful discussion of our various
philosophies in this area.
