I have read the recent hit on textbook management but
I have very specific questions.
My school district is buying Destiny from Follett and
we, at the high school, will probably be using
Textbook Manager. I expect to be very involved in the
initial setting up, doing the cataloging and
supervising the barcoding of books etc., but I hope
that in the long term the work will be shared by the
departments and/or staffed by a clerk. I would like to
hear of other people’s experiences with Textbook
Manager, in particular:
In preparation-Expecting that many barcodes will be
ripped off or defaced, I plan to have books barcoded
(with protector label) AND marked inside with the
same, indelibly written, number. Time consuming I
know but any other comments?
Storage - Do you have a central textbook depository?
If not how do you deal with different storage areas?
Do you record permanent home of the book in your MARC
record (holding record) and/or physically in the book?
Circulation
 Do students check out all 7 (say) textbooks
in one go or do they do it by subject? Just how do
you manage checkout?
 How many stations (computers with scanners)
do you have at which books can be checked out/in?
 How do you manage returned textbooks? Who
checks them in and gets them to the appropriate
“warehouse” area?
Thank you.
Thelma Dakubu.
