I am enlisting the collective wisdom of this group to help me respond.
One of the kindergarten teachers forwarded to me a message from a
parent. The parent wants me to help her son choose more "age
appropriate" books. She is unhappy with the books he has been selecting.
The book he brought home yesterday was by Aliki about Shakespeare and
the Globe Theatre.
I am more than happy to help students select books, but "age
appropriate" is a matter of opinion. I have third graders who have
trouble with I Can Read books and kindergarteners who can race through
The Magic Tree House series. Does anyone out there have a standard
letter they share with parents about book selection? Personally, I
prefer to make suggestions but allow the students to select what appeals
to them. Additionally, if a student is in kindergarten, doesn't it seem
reasonable to expect the parent to read the book to the child?
Thanks for letting me vent a little.
