I'm writing to pick the collective brains of the group. I've been requested by an
administrator to select a variety of materials for a teenage male student who is
required as a condition of treatment, to read a novel (s) about a main character
who faces the consequences of his or her use/abuse of alcohol or drugs. This
student does not read on level. I don't know what grade he is in or what his
reading level might be. I do know that he doesn't like to read and may have
learning disabilities.
I've searched Novelist and came up with Tears of a Tiger by Draper. I'm also
wondering about Inexcusable by Chris Lynch (haven't read it (Yet). I showed the
administrator Smack and Crank - but they were "too long" . I've looked at Reading
Rants, Multnomoh OR. website and Patrick Jones' website, Nancy keenes site, and
guysread.com.
Can anyone direct me to a resorce or make suggestions for me? As good as it is, I'd
like to avoid a book like "Go Ask Alice" as I think the student may be more
receptive (I don't know if he will be receptive at all) to a male main character.
TIA -
Lisa
PS - I'll post a list if anyone is interested
