Let me go at this from a different angle:

Are "cohesive devices" (middle school level) the same thing as connectors,
transitions, use of pronouns, conjunctions -- things writers use to make sure their
papers have clarity of expression and purpose as well as logical order and unity?
I googled the term and followed the links, and this is all I can surmise.
