Okay…the horse is out of the barn and now we’re trying … well, you know
the story!
Question:
Do you know of any source (preferably, online) that identifies and
provides reviews—preferably, full text—for fiction titles, many of which
are old (published in the early 80s) and/or out-of-print? If you had to
locate reviews for your collection, retrospectively, what source or
sources would you use? I’m talking about hundreds, maybe thousands, of
titles.
Problem:
As with many (most?) schools, our teachers have been encouraged to
develop classroom libraries. Some began growing a collection years
before this encouragement was offered. Now, it seems, that the
administrators who did the encouraging want to be certain that the books
included in classroom libraries are “quality literature.”
Although most of the books are relatively current publications, many are
old and long out-of-print. Reviews are difficult to locate for a lot of
the titles.
I have been using Follett’s Titlewave because it identifies review
sources, date of review, and, in many cases, full text reviews.
Unfortunately, many of the titles included in classroom libraries are
not included in Titlewave. While Perma-bound includes names of
reviewing sources, it provides no indication as to whether reviews were
favorable, neutral or unfavorable—and provides no date for the reviews.
As you can see, I really am hoping for a miracle! I would love to find
an online source (subscription database, or otherwise) that provides
reviews of young adult fiction titles—with publication dates that range
from recent to “your mother may have read this book!” Your help (and
understanding of the dilemma I’m in) is greatly, greatly appreciated.
Thanks, so much.
