First books by Native authors Michael Dorris and Louise Erdrich were for
the adult reader, but both also moved into writing for children. Erdrich's
BIRCHBARK HOUSE is an excellent work of historical fiction that counters
the negative portrayals of Native people in LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE,
and Dorris's books MORNING GIRL and GUESTS tell the encounter story from
the point of view of Native kids.
Like Dorris and Erdrich, Alexie is working on literature for children and
young adults. His first book will be a young adult novel titled The
Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. It will be released in 2007 by
Little, Brown. I really enjoy Alexie's books - RESERVATION BLUES is awesome
- and have high hopes for his children and YA titles.
