Here are some tips for those of you attending the ALA Conference June 22-28:

Registration: Pick up your badge and conference information at the convention
center (if you registered in advance, some of that is sent to you, but you still
need to pick up your badge holder and conference program). Registration opens
Thursday at 7:30 AM. For registration hours go to www.ala.org/annual and click on
Registration.
* Wear your badge at all times when you’re in the convention center.
* While you’re in the conference registration area, look for the information booth
about ALA’s
Midwinter Meeting in Seattle in January 2007.
* Learn the layout of the convention center. This will save you time later. Also,
check out what
restaurants are within easy walking distance.
* Check your conference program to see when your favorite authors will be signing
books in the
   exhibit hall.
* Visit YALSA’s Membership Booth in lobby J of the convention center to get your
YALSA flair:
member ribbon, pin and 50th anniversary sticker.

At the conference YALSA will host both meetings and programs. Meetings are a good
thing to attend if you're interested in getting involved in YALSA or just want to
learn more about the association. Listed below are some meetings & events of note.
ALA has an open meeting policy, so any registered conference attendee is welcome
to attend. The only exception for YALSA are the awards committee meetings. For a
complete list of YALSA *programs* at the conference, go to: www.ala.org/yalsa.

Friday:
8:30 - 5:00 Reading With Your Ears Preconference. JW Ile de France 1&2. This is a
ticketed event. Tickets must be purchased through the YALSA Office and won’t be
available on site. To purchase tickets, contact Nichole Gilbert at
ngilbert@ala.org or 1.800.545.2433 x4387.
4:00 - 5:00 YALSA 101. MCC 253. Head to the convention center for tips on making
the most of conference and your YALSA membership. Refreshments and goodie bags
will be provided by School Library Journal.
8:00 - 10:00 PM Booklist Books for Youth Forum. This year’s focus is “What’s So
Funny.” Held in the Jefferson Ballroom of the Hilton New Orleans Riverside.

Saturday:
10:30 - 12:00 All Committee Meeting. HIL Grand Ballroom B. If you’re interested
in participating on a YALSA committee, go to this meeting. The name is a slight
misnomer. All-Committee is for all of YALSA’s Process Committees. These Selection
Committee meetings are not open: Printz, Edwards and Alex. You are welcome to
attend any of the other committees that meet at a time other than All-Committee.
Those dates & times are available on the YALSA website.
12:00 - 2:00 Edwards Luncheon. HIL Grand Ballroom A. Enjoy a relaxing lunch and
listen to Jacqueline Woodson, the winner of the 2006 Edwards Award speak about her
winning books. This is a ticketed event. Tickets must be purchased through the
YALSA Office by Wed. and won’t be available on site. To purchase tickets, contact
Nichole Gilbert at ngilbert@ala.org or 1.800.545.2433 x4387.
2:30 - 5:30 YALSA Board of Directors Meeting. MCC 350. The YALSA Board of
Directors meets in the convention center. Observing YALSA Board meetings is a good
way to learn about the governance of your division.

Monday:
7:00 - 10:00 AM: Youth Council Caucus. MCC 264. Discuss matters of interest to
the three youth divisions and how the ALA Council might address them.
4:00 - 5:30 PM: YALSA Membership Meeting & President’s Program. MCC 356. Get a
quick report on YALSA’s accomplishments for the past year, then stay and hear a
panel of authors, editors and librarians discuss “How Adult Is Young Adult.”
8:00 - 10:00: Printz Program and Reception. MCC 353. Come hear the authors of the
winning and honor books speak and stay for a dessert reception. This is a ticketed
event. Tickets can be purchased by contacting Nichole Gilbert at ngilbert@ala.org
or 1.800.545.2433 x4387 or on site (for $6 extra).

Tuesday:
There are no conference programs today. Exhibits close today at 3PM, and
publishers often mark their books for half price. There will also be lots of
raffles and prizes. Be sure to visit the booths of our official Teen Read Week
Partners. Go online to www.ala.org/annual and make a list of all the exhibitors
you want to visit-keeping their booth numbers handy makes your exhibit time more
worthwhile.

1:30 - 3:30 PM YALSA Board Meeting. MCC 350. The YALSA Board meets for the second
time, in their same room.

Any time during conference:
Membership Booth: Visit the YALSA membership booth in Lobby J of the convention
center for news and for your member ribbons, pins and other fabulous freebies like
a WWE Summer Reading Slam poster.
ALA Store: shop early at the ALA Store as sometimes the supplies of favorite items
run low. Be sure to look for: 1) a new expanded line of Teen Read Week products for
‘06, 2) YALSA's Sizzling Summer Reading Programs for Young Adults, 2nd ed., which
was edited by YALSA’s own Katharine Kan, 3) More Outstanding Books for the College
Bound and 5) 50th anniversary YALSA mugs and pins.
