The library in my high school had only the first three letters of the
author's last name on the spine. I really disliked shelving fiction
books because I was taught that you had to shelve the books as if the
full author's name was on the spine. When I became a librarian and was
able to change the spine label to the author's full last name I did so.

I think you may have just seen some "quick & dirty" shelving! Just
because
the spine label is limited by three letters, there isn't any reason a
shelver
wouldn't put Wild first, then Wilder, Willard, Williams, Wilson....etc.
And not
only that - but titles in alphabetical order for each author.
