I was offline when this request first came through so I missed its context but my
first thought
(apart from the Mem Fox book) was to approach the local school or public library
that the mothers
are likely to use and talk to them about setting up a "grab bags" scheme. I did
this in my library
and it consisted of making a number of library bags from cheap, bright fabric and
putting seven
read-alouds into them so parents could come in and check out a bag that had enough
stories for a
week's worth of reading. I started the collection by using duplicate copies of
suitable books from
the shelves and then built them up with cheap purchases from book clubs, book
fairs, second hand
stores and so on. It was extremely popular because it was so quick and simple for
parents to borrow
and they didn't have to know anything about children's literature to make
selections.
I would also make posters to display using some of the quotes from Fox and Trelease
et al. My
favourite is "Children become readers on the laps of their parents" although I
don't know who said
it.
