I am trying two new strategies for sharing information about American
Indians in children's literature: Wikipedia and blogging.
Given the increased attention to Wikipedia (more positive than negative, of
late) and recognition by professors across the country that students are
using it, more and more people with research expertise are adding and
editing entries in their area(s) of expertise. So---I added a page to
Wikipedia, titled American Indians in Children's Literature. Here's the
link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Indians_in_Children%27s_Literature.
When you talk with students about using Wikipedia, I feel it is crucial
that you also require them to read the "Discussion" and "History" tab for
whatever article they're reading. There is much to learn in these two
behind-the-scenes functions of Wikipedia.
Second, I've created a blog. I started with an extensive list of children's
books I recommend, but have been trying to post to the blog every few days,
with news about American Indians in Children's Literature. As you read
through the blog, you'll see that the Northern Arizona Book Festival
announced a new Literature Award, titled the LACAPA SPIRIT PRIZE, named
after Michael Lacapa, that will be awarded annually to a children's book
set in the southwest. I've started a "links" section on the blog, and link
to the Wikipedia page (noted above) from the blog. I'm also linking to
other sites (like Oyate) that are resources for teachers, librarians,
parents interested in Native Americans and children's literature. In the
blog posts, I note articles (on line) on the topic, and I plan to create a
second set of links to these articles. Thing is---I'm new to blogging, and
there's a lot to learn about how to do it! So it is slow-going for me. Any
input you have to improve the blog is greatly welcome and appreciated.
