[LM_NET] New reading research?

My principal came to me on Friday stating he had seen on one of the early morning 
news shows how the latest reading research says that reading aloud to children does 
not improve reading, but that having access to lots of books is more influential as 
a factor.  I cannot find this research anywhere.  He says it was on either cbs or 
abc....anyone heard of such research or the news story?
