Thanks to all who answered my query regarding Scots-Irish titles set in the
American South. Although I neglected to state I specifically wanted non-fiction, I
now am intrigued by the Outlander series and plan to try them out! I did purchase
“Born Fighting” which looks really good so far.
So here’s what I heard:
The Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon, I believe there are 5 in the
series. The last 2- The Firey Cross and A Breath of Snow and Ashes are
set in North Carolina.
"The United States of Appalachia", which, among other things covers the Scots-Irish
in that area. “Born Fighting: How the Scots-Irish Shaped America" will also work.
We have a UNC Press title, "The Scotch(???)-Irish: A Social History" which is a
little more academic, and, I still don't agree with the apparently now accepted
usage of "Scotch" for Scots!
Not specifically what you are looking for re the South and adult level, but
I recently purchased Journey of Hope: The Story of Irish Immigration to
America by Kerby Miller and Patricia Mulholland Miller.
It's not exactly Immigration based but it is a very good book series I'm
reading right now by Diana Gabaldon...it starts with Outlander, then Dragon
Fly in Amber, and right now I'm on Voyager - but there are two more books
in the series - takes place in Scotland back and forth between the 18th
century and 20th century, and is honestly one of the best series I've ever
read. Definitely for the adult reading level.
What about the Outlander Series? Breath of Snow and Ashes is the latest and
is wonderful - of course it is historical fiction
Thanks again!
