“I am a LMS for a Middle School with fixed schedules
for grades 5 & 6 and open access for grades 7-8. Up
until last week I had a Library aide who handled
circulation only and did a great job. The position has
been eliminated due to budgetary issues.
Now if I am out I do not want a substitute for
various reasons. I'm not a Prep for any teacher and
would prefer not to have someone come in for a day LMS
or not who has no idea how my collection is arranged
not to mention Library protocol which can be different
for each Library.”
“Whether I'm going to be absent and know about it ahead of time or not,
I get no say in who my sub is. Most times when I've returned, my aides quite
frequently tell me it had been someone THEY never saw before. So while if I'm out
and my aides are both in (morning and afternoon), then we still do checkout and the
library runs as pretty close to normal as possible! However if I'm out, and one of
the aides is, then no checkout. I would never want a sub who had no experience
testing out whether or not she could figure out our circ system.
Same with plans-I try to leave as close to what I would have done with a sub. But
I also know that our sub pool is mostly made up of young, just-out-of-school
classroom teachers who get a little spooked by being put in the library.”
