I am a new Media Specialist in Coolidge, Arizona, USA. I am SO new that my
Media Center isn't built yet. In the meantime, I am sharing the Media
Center at a neighboring school. My host is also new in the Media Center
with a background in Middle School Language Arts. I earned my MLIS in 2004
from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.
Our school is K-8. The nonfiction is all shelved together, the middle
school fiction has its own section, but it is the elementary fiction we need
advice on. Is there a "best" way to seperately shelve for the different
grade levels? There seem to be at least 6 different schemes at work with
some authors (such as Silverstein, Cleary, and Suess) shelved in different
areas. I understand the E (easy) but can't recall an E5, EIC, or EB
catagories. Apparently the previous LMS also used colored dots to
differentiate grade levels or levels of difficulty. We aren't sure.
How do most of you differentiate among (between?) the different reading and
grade levels? We are a Reading First school and most of the books have a
Lexile number on them, but that doesn't seem to explain the shelving system.
Before we decide to rearrange half of the library, I would appreciate any
input from my more experienced library friends. For now, I am using my home
email because the district email system is not yet set-up.
Thank you in advance for all your help.
Sincerely,
Marci Mathers
