I had also received several suggestions that the book in question might be
"Sylvester and the Magic Pebble". However, the original request (see below)
was for a rock that makes a journey and ultimately changes from a rough
state into a more polished state. Yes, Sylvester was my first thought when I
heard it, but the more info I received, the more clear it was that Sylvester
was the wrong direction.
