Maybe this is a "new genre" for the Communication Arts teacher and Educational
Leadership (or perhaps the article's author), but librarians have been aware of
"problem novels" since the 1970's. It may not have been directly noted that this
genre was called 'problem novels' but since YA novels / reality novels started with
authors such as Robert Cormier, Judy Blume, M.E. Kerr, etc., "problem novels" have
been the mainstay of YA literature in most libraries.
I think this is just a sign, perhaps, of what we always knew---librarians are SO
far ahead of the rest of the educational profession, that what we know to be
standard is just now making it's mark on the rest of the professional world.
Problem novels are not a new genre, they are just being recognized by the rest of
the educational profession. Thank goodness, they're catching up slowly!
