"The Cutter number, or Cutter, is an alpha-numeric device for representing
words or names by using one or more letters followed by one or more arabic
numerals used decimally. The combination of letters and numbers, called the
Cutter, follows the classification number and is preceded by a decimal
point. It is named for Charles Ammi Cutter, who developed several tables
using letters and numbers to achieve an alphabetical arrangement within a
given class. Book numbers and some subdivisions in the LC classification
schedules are types of Cutter numbers. In the shelflist and on the shelf,
the Cutter is the means by which an alphabetical arrangement of books is
achieved."

For Example you could have 322 ( Dewey) with B48p under it - instead of the
first three letters of the author's name
Library of Congress uses Cutter numbers but some academic libraries also use
it with the Dewey as my example above. There are charts to help you
determine the Cutter number.
__________
The Sears list of Subject Headings is a compendium of approved Subject
headings used to catalog a book so there is consistency in collections.

Here are a couple places where a library would purchase one. If you go to
your school library you should be able to examine a copy.

You may have an older copy in your school library as most small libraries
can't always afford the latest edition.
