My question concerned duties for a part time aid who may not be able to come
everyday.
So far my new person has been able to come in MOST of the time.
The jobs we have decided on so far are;
updating the library schedule in our outlook shared calendar. This year I hope to
keep the
library calendar viewable by everyone. She will come in, check the book (which is
the final
word) and update the calendar.
checking the book drop and checking in any books that are there
shelves if there is a backup the morning person didn't get done
checking the laminator to see if anything is waiting
shelving magazines in the magazine room and checking boxes for correct labels as she
goes along.
I only had one reply which also went to the whole listserv but I am including it
again.
I have two wonderful helpers who are very erratic as to when they can
actually come. I save these jobs for them (and for random helpful parents
who stop in and say, "I've got a few minutes until I have to pick up my
kid - or talk to Mrs. Soandso - or help in the 4th grade - can I be of
any help in here?"):
Preparing books and magazines for discard
Taking discarded books to used book store or recycling center for me
Updating and filing catalogs
Dusting shelves
Calling vendors for catalogs
Updating or designing forms on the computer
Cleaning out old files (pulling all memos dated last year, forms from
discontinued programs, and so on, and setting them aside for a quick run-
through and toss by yours-truly)
Addressing envelopes for thank-you notes
Weeding (she walks along the shelves and pulls books that look really
shabby or old and sets them aside for me to check)
Making copies of handouts for future events
Counting and rolling change from fine box and filling out a deposit slip
Changing the bulletin boards and displays
Cutting up old forms into quarters for scrap paper
Punching out Ellison shapes for future bulletin boards and displays
What I do with most of these jobs is make a job box that contains the
supplies needed for a certain job (like scissors, a black marker, paper
rolls for coins, dustrag and cleaner, roster for addresses, etc.) and
written directions for each job (which I save for re-use the next time).
I set the box (clearly labeled "JOB BOX")in a certain place on a shelf.
Each woman knows to look there when she comes in, and they even sometimes
come in when I'm not here and get things done.
If I don't have anything else for them to do, there's always shelving -
and shelf-reading... I ask each woman to start in a different section and
keep track of where she ends each time. Next time, she knows to start
back at that same point and move on. We have a small collection, so this
is usually enough shelf-reading to keep us fairly organized, along with
the shelf-reading I ask all my helpers to do as we reshelve books.
