Check your state's services for the blind and visually impaired. There should be
Federal Quota Funds available to assist in purchasing materials in large print for
the student through the American Printing House for the Blind. If you have a
department of Rehabilitative Services or Services for the Blind and Visually
Impaired at the state level, this department should be able to direct you to some
resources or funds to provide the student with not only materials but also
equipment. Your state's department of education / special needs / education should
be able to offer some guidance in providing resources for the student AND there
should also be a teacher who specializes in the education of visually impaired and
blind students available to assist the student, the teacher, and the parents in
locating and utilizing the resources necessary for education in the mainstream
classroom.

In the meantime, you might want to consider contacting your state's (or a
multi-state) library for the blind to see if there are books available in large
print or on tape that the student is eligible for. This will require that a
teacher of the visually impaired OR a doctor to sign a document certifying that the
student needs specialized equipment AND materials. Once the form is completed, the
student is eligible to use the library's resources free of charge--- and should be
receiving special equipment to use the 4-track (cassette tapes) tapes to listen to
books on tape.

While large print is unique, it is not as uncommon as it once was (in the 1970's
and 1980's)---especially for children and young adults. Many vendors provide large
print resources at a comparable price to the regular print. Thorndike Press is one
vendor that has a great selection of materials in large print that "aren't like
LARGE print" at all. In fact, you might be able to have Thorndike send you a few
samples of their large print books to examine---many students without visual
impairments also enjoy reading large print because of the ease in which the print
(and white space) is seen.

Here is a link to Thorndike and some other resources that you might want to check
into for large print materials:

Let me know if you need more resources. I know that there are others on the list
who have some direct knowledge of other things, so you will probably hear from them
also!

Good luck!

Hi everyone! We just had a student transfer to us that is vision impaired.
Unfortunatly, I do not have any large print books in my library for him to read.
Does anyone konw of any organizations that may donate books or give money to order
large print books? I would really like to have some books available that this
student can read.

Thanks in advance for your help!
