Thanks to everyone who submitted the following quotation:
"According to recognized aeronautical tests, the bumblebee cannot fly because of
the weight and shape of his body in relation to his total wing area. The
bumblebee does not know this so he goes ahead and flies anyway."
We aren't sure, but we believe that Mary Kay (of Mary Kay cosmetics) may have been
the one to state this as an example of perserverance--- when Mary Kay began her
company in the early 1960's she was told that women are not business leaders and do
not own companies....women should be barefoot and pregnant.
(I know that the City of Dallas is glad that she ignored this prediction for her
cosmetic company, as those MK consultants spend millions each year in Dallas when
MK holds the convention here!)
For the reasoning why this quote was needed----
Our mini "One Book, One Community" program read "The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue
Monk. The discussion came up among our high school students about different
things, including "what are grits?" (because the main character had to kneel in the
grits). As a reminder of the book, we created small packets of "bee things" or
"honey things" and gave the students their own bags of: Bit o' Honey candy, honey
flavored crackers, a small packet of grits, and the quote (as requested from
LM_NET). The bags were yellow and had pictures of bees on them....and with the
quote we reminded our students:
--- "Never, Ever Quit Doing Your Very Best....remember this:
According to recognized aeronautical tests, the bumblebee cannot fly because of
the weight and shape of his body in relation to his total wing area. The
bumblebee does not know this, so he goes ahead and flies anyway."
We told our students that all things are possible with the right attitude and
positive reinforcement (which we give them)---to the bee, the honey is his
reinforcement and no one has told him anything differently about his ability to
achieve his goal!
Thanks again for all your help!!
