Here is a selection of fantasy that middle school age kids in our public
library and reading group really like:
The sign of the Qin series. L.G. Bass
The eye, the ear, and the arm. Farmer
City of Ember; and its sequel, People of Sparks. DuPrau
The Amulet of Samarkand, and its sequel, The Golem's eye. Stroud
Inkheart; and Dragon Rider; The thief lord. Funke
Once upon a marigold. Ferris
Eragon, and its sequel- just out- Eldest. Paolini
Island of the aunts. Ibbotson
Mistress Masham's repose (an oldie but goodie). T.H. White
Sorcery and Cecilia. Stevermer & Wrede
His dark materials trilogy: The golden compass; The subtle knife; The amber
spyglass. Pullman.
They split on Clive Barker's Abarat, and its sequel; with each group feeling
strongly about their like or dislike of it, which made for good discussion!
I found the books very imaginative and intriguing, but more sophisticated
and darker/weirder/creepier than most other lit. for this age group.
My seventeen-year old daughter read Heinlein's "Stranger in a strange land"
this summer and LOVED it, as did I at the same age.
