Steve beat me to the solution to the reading during the workday dilemma--get as
many staff members as possible on the SSR bandwagon. We did a Teen Read Day as
part of Teen Read Week. I convinced every English teacher to do SSR on the same
day. The teachers loved the chance to model reading for their students. The
students wrote comments and 98% were very enthusiastic about Teen Read Day,
suggesting we do it on a regular basis. The students said they want to read but
never have time.
Ironically, the students in study halls did not want to use the library for SSR
during their study periods. We brought in rocking chairs and bean bag chairs,
table lamps and reading lights. We turned off the regular lights and made the room
as cozy as we could. Nevertheless, they students said they needed study halls for
homework other than reading and only a few came to read.
