During the course of the 2004-2005 school year, I had the opportunity for
the first time to test out our district's reconsideration policy. As a
result of that process, I am currently refining our policy and procedures.

According to our policy, the library media director is a member of the
reconsideration committee. Our policy also states the following:
"Committee members directly associated with the complaint or having had a
part in the selection or use of the material in question shall be excused
from the committee during its deliberation on such material. The district
administrator will appoint a temporary replacement for the excused member,
with the replacement having the same general qualifications."

Since I am the only library media person in the district, I was a member
of the committee. However, I could not take part in the final meeting
where the committee's recommendation was developed. We tried,
unsuccessfully, to find a temporary replacement. Therefore, I had no
"voice" in the deliberations. (Fortunately it did not matter in this
particular case but I would like to be prepared for the future.)

My questions are these: How do schools with similar situations handle
this? and How do you ensure that your replacement represents your views?

I would greatly appreciate any feedback!
