Toni asked us to share those times we have had that make it all worthwhile, and I
sent her Corey's
Story about a little abused boy who found sanctuary in our library.
Today was totally different but just as special. There are those (ie colleagues)
who say I go
overboard at Christmas turning the library into a fantasy-land as we promote
Santa's Book Shop aka
the annual book fair. There are those (ie hubby) who say I spend too much money on
stuff for such a
short time and for kids that are not my own. There are those (ie my mum) who say I
should grow up
and stop believing in Santa. There are those (ie all the above) who should get
back in their boxes.
Last night, after much searching, I found a Santa train set and it set me back
about $US75. This
morning, I spent my time creating a bit of a winter wonderland scene with starry
fabric and lights
and Santa's sleigh whizzing across the sky over "snow-covered" fields, a little
village and a forest
of Christmas trees. Then our ICT tekkie and I got the train going, only to
discover than it puffs
smoke, whistles and plays Christmas carols. It travels around the village, through
the tunnel (a
cardboard box), past the frozen lake (a mirror) and through the forest. At
lunchtime we opened as
usual and within minutes, the library was full of kids gathered around, totally
entranced, just
watching. Nobody touched, nobody did anything but take their imaginations on a
wonderful journey.
You could just see it.
Tomorrow I am going shopping again cos my imagination is working and there are
things I could add to
the display - when it is done I will put a photo on our website. But what did those
K-6 kids learn
about libraries today?
This will be my last Christmas with the kids because by this time next year I will
have retired, but
what a most precious, special memory I have to take with me - more than anything
$75 can buy.
