Dear LM_NET:

  This year our policy was
to allow students the first 10-15 minutes of studyhall time to come to the media
center to read newspapers or
magazines and select a magazine or book to check-out. Then they returned to their
studyhall. Students with
research passes stayed for the entire period. There was a limit of ten students
from a studyhall.

The hope was that students who really needed to study or do research would take the
time to get a
research pass from the classroom teacher who had assigned the work. Students who
just needed a
free reading book would do so within the first ten minutes of the studyhall period.

In reality we had students coming to "chill out" in the media center for 10-15
minutes who would then
return to studyhall to do their homework. Few students made the effort to get a
research pass.

We were trying to change the trend from previous years where students would check
out of studyhall
and remain in the media center for the entire period. The library in reality
became a third studyhall center.
Students signing out of the studyhall centers weren't necessarily those with the
goal of doing serious
research.

Question: What are your high school policies concerning students coming from
studyhall? With our
present situation students are not viewing the media center as a place for research.
How do you attract students who really wish to do serious research? How do you
attract students who
really would like to just sit and read? How do you change the attitude of faculty
members to recognize that the
media center is a place for study and research? That it's not a place to send
students because they feel
it's a convenient spot to send students so that their own studyhall is smaller in
numbers. As it is now
we are creating a glorified babysitting service.
