My principal has worked out a deal with some researchers at the University
of Michigan, who have developed some software that will "translate"
college level texts into a lower reading level. Supposedly, you install
this software on a computer, surf to a college level site, then choose
"8th grade" and boom, out comes the document now "re-written" at a lower
reading level.
My first instinct is that this is breaking copyright, or am I way off
base. He wants me to be a part of this process- as they want to have the
science teachers choose materials. What I want to know is why can't the
kids choose materials at their own level? Why would they choose college
level texts for a middle school project? What are your thoughts on this
software?
