I have just returned from our first meeting to determine our state award nominees
for the 2006-2007 school year. We were very disappointed that many books were
stricken from the nominee list because a simple survey has not been returned from
the publisher (especially Houghton Mifflin). The survey consists of an
affirmation that the author is a resident of the US, and that the book will be in
print in 2006. For the second year in a row, nothing was returned from Houghton
Mifflin; we had especially wanted to include High Heat by Carl Deuker. We also
had nominated Jane Yolen's Sword of the Rightful King, but no survey was returned.
We still have 48 books on the list, but we want the BEST we can offer to our
students. Any suggestions on a different way to contact the publishers to ensure
more books are included? How do those in other states handle this?
Thanks.
