This is obviously a "hot topic." I agree with Barbara (again). Creating a
special area for series books does not eliminate teaching search skills.
After MANY years as a media specialist I am convinced that whatever we can do to
encourage kids to read is good. And, we can still teach them how to search using
the catalog when it will help them. But, if we force them into it too much they
may be likely to avoid the media centers all together.
Interesting observation: The books that came with our 5th grade reading textbooks
came in bins. Some of these are kept in the media center, others are in the
classroom. I know the bins in the media center will be popular and that kids will
gravitate to them.
