Dear Suzanne,
We need more information on why you are trying to motivate the 'staff' mentioned
below.
Are you having trouble with yours?
Are you designing a class to present to the below mentioned 'staff'
Speaking as a Library Media Technician...I work 4 days a week and 4 1/2 hours a day
with a
contract year of 168 days. I see every child in my elementary school, 650, once to
twice every
two weeks. I read to them, present genre's too them, teach OPAC to them, and re
enforce
research skills that they are suppose to be learning from their teachers. In my
district we were
cut back from 6 hours and 5 days a week, two school years ago.
Now that you have the history and I'm sure can fill in the meat of the matter, let
me tell you this,
What motivates me? What keeps me going in a job that has been so severely cut back?
The Children!
You want to motivate 'staff' let them work with the children as much as possible.
Nothing can pay you
for the thrill of seeing a 'Ah Ha', moment shine in a child's eyes. Let them think
of and design a monthly
bulletin board, tell the children who did that for them. Let the staff read a
favorite story from their childhood
or their own children's to the students.
Sigh, down off my soap box...let's just say these past two years it is only the
children's discovery, delight and
obvious joy of coming to and being in the library that has kept me motivated to be
the best Library Media Tech
I can be for these students. By the way I've been doing this job for 17 years.
