I have a 10th grader who is looking for a book she read a couple of years
ago. There is not much to go on. It is the story of a group of children
growing up in Chicago in the ghetto and it has a tan cover. When she
originally asked for it she said she thought it was "Anywhere But Here".
(but it was not...)

Could it be There are No Children Here by Alex Kotlowitz?
Take care,
