We have the same situation -- kids who don't want their parents to see their
report cards so they hang on to their books. We do a couple of things:
1. I visit personally with the student and tell them that they have the
wonderful opportunity to donate to the our library -- either by bringing $(cost
of book) or returning their book. This usually jars them -- money speaks louder
than anything else!
2. Email or call home. I've gotten several things back this way.
3. Our office sends a bill to the parents. (This covers any school obligation,
be it textbook, calculator, library book, music fees, sports, whatever. What
we've found is that if a student has a library book that is way overdue,
chances are, there are other obligations, also.)
