Thanks to all who responded to my request for titles dealing with genocide. I have
nice list to give to the teacher now. Below are the replies I received.

Sonia Levitin's The Return is about the attempt to wipe out Jews in Ethiopia. A
teacher in my school uses this title along with Children of the River. Levitin has
also written a novel on Somalia, I think. I believe it had to do with child slave
trade? I read Forgotten Fire last year and loved it.

What about Milkweed by Spinelli?

Night
Briar Rose
Hiroshima

An excellent book is Road from Home, by David Kherdian, about the
genocide of the Armenians by the Turks. It's a Newbery Honor Book, and
its about the author's grandmother when she was a girl.
There is an excellent video: "A Good Man in Hell" from the US Holocaust
Memorial Museum (www.ushmm.org). It is an interview with General Romeo
Dallaire about the Rwanda Genocide. It's only 12 minutes, but powerful! It
could be shown to middle schoolers. I also use it with my college students.

We Are Witnesses: Five Diaries of the Teenagers Who died in the Holocaust by Jacob
Boas**2nd best
One Eye Laughing, the Other Weeping: The diary of Julie Weiss by Barry Denenberg
(Dear America) 2000
Torn Thread by Anne Isaacs 2000
Shadow of the Wall by Christa Laird 1989
After the War by Carol Matyas 1996
Run Boy, Run: A Novel by Uri Orlev 2003 **I think this one is the best!
Escape to the Forest: Based on a True Story of the Holocaust by Ruth Yaffe Radin &
Janet Hamlin 2000
The Shadow Children by Steven Schnur and Herbert Tauss 1994 **I think this is the
3rd best title
Devil's Arthimetic by Jane Yolen

My son is reading The Wave by Strasser. Based on a true story in California. A
history teacher going over the holocaust does and experiment that gets out of
control. My son's reading it in 7th.
