Thanks so much for your response. Your comments helped in my making a
choice for new ones this year. I also talked to district AV repairman
and he agreed with many of you. The 3M 1880's are good, but the 1865's
are only $4 more thru our order cooperative and much brighter.

A number of you asked me to post a hit.

Original Post......

I have another question. One of my teachers is asking about a
"better"
overhead projector. Ours are the 3-M series, 900's and 9060's. I
have
no idea how old they are! We had two DuKane's that our teachers liked
but our repair service cannot get new parts.

What is a great overhead projector that you would recommend? Price,
stock #, catalog name, etc. Thanks so much.

Below are comments from you.......

I definitely do NOT recommend the 3M 1810. We had 6 of those, and the
teachers fought over them at the beginning of the year, since our other
overheads are dinosaurs. Only 2 of them are still working. It's
impossible to change the bulbs, something our principal found out when
he attempted it, and snapped the base right off the bulb!
--------------------------

We have been buying the Elmo HP L3600. I recently got a bid price of
$144.00 each. The projector holds a second bulb so when one burns out,

they can switch without interrupting the class.
--------------------------

Our HS math and science teachers swear by the ones with "dual bulb
carriage" (from 3m and Eiki - don't have model #s here). When a bulb
blows/goes out, they just slide over to the second bulb, then replace
the dead bulb later - no down time!!

We've had good luck with 3M and Bell+Howell/Eiki (I think that the
latter 2 bought one another!). Some are more portable, others
sturdier.

My A/V guy said that it seems to them that the plastic/ABS case
overheads burn up bulbs faster due to extra static electricity, but
that
he didn't have any hard evidence.
------------------------------

I did a little research into this question this past fall. It
seems that the big question/concern is the number of lumens. The
bigger
the room the more lumens you need. If the room has a lot of outside
light and it is hard to close off that light, then you need more
lumens.
The rule of thumb for a normal classroom with some spillover outside
lighting (one window) was 2400 to 2600 lumen. Go higher if you have
large classrooms or will be using them primarily in a large room. I
tend
to prefer the Eiki or the 3-M models as they last longer and bulbs for
them are fairly inexpensive. Choose the model depending on the lumen
needs that you have. We have discounts through School Specialty
Supply,
Demco, Highsmith. Another great source is Audio Visual Supply out of
San
Antonio, TX. They have great prices. I was able to purchase a large
EIKI
cassette player recorder for $90.00.
------------------------------

I've been very pleased with the ELMO overheads we
have. We have several versions (some older, some
newer) of the L3600. Here's a webpage with some
further information

----------------------------

I've always been happy with the
        Eiki Machines 3850A $125.00
                3870A $175.00

Good turn around from the company
----------------------------

We're looking at an Elmo machine for next year -- any recommendations?

What about the data projector by Toshiba -- looks like an Elmo that is
attached directly to a LCD/Video Projector? Sells from $1600-$3200.
Or
is it better just to purchase an Elmo and then connect it to an
LCD/Video Projector?

Thoughts -- pro and con are appreciated!!!
---------------------------

I have Dukanes, Buhls, a couple of 3Ms, a Port-a-scribe, an Apollo.
Even
among these brand names, I have different models that are better for
different purposes. It depends alot on how you plan to use it - size
of
room, distance from surface, etc. Do some window shopping in the AV
catalogs
and review the specifications for different machines.
----------------------

I'm currently buying Apollo 2202 overheads from Southeastern AV
(www.seaudiovisual@starband.net).
-----------------------

About 7-8 yrs. ago we began methodically replacing our ancient
overheads
with the 3M 9060's and 9100's and thought we were in heaven. Do they
even
make those any more? Lately, the 3M ones we've gotten are similar
(closed
head) but a different series (don't have the model number because I'm
at
home) and they look the same and use the same ENX bulb, but are much
brighter!
---------------------

Teachers seem to like 3M's the best. The nicest ones would be the 1800
models. Most of them use ENX or FXL lamps. You can substitute an ENX
for the brightrer FXL lamp, but youi can not sub a FXL for an ENX.
---------------------

I'm very interested in the responses you get! I have bought 4 EIKI's
#3875BA at $269. The teachers really like them and say they have a
very
clear projection, but if there is something better, I would love to
know! (this is my first year)
--------------------

They are 3M Model 1825. They look like the 9060's and 9100's and take
the
ENX bulb.
