- Thread-Topic: Should librarians manage textbook inventory?
I am working at a middle school where textbook management for our school is
entirely my responsibility. I am opposed to the idea because it takes about 60% of
my time at the beginning and end of the year to do this task and about 40% of my
time during the year because of the high student turnover rate here.
Also, the issue of collecting for lost books has been left up to the library media
teachers at our secondary schools and the principals haven't been able to (or don't
want to) enforce anything we've tried in order to get the books back or the money
for replacements. The district breathes down our necks to minimize loss and
questions every textbook order with the third degree.
Mostly, though, I oppose how much time it takes out of my day. This is time that
could be better spent teaching lessons, collection management, working one-on-one
with students, etc.

I am currently working on an article for Media &
Methods magazine on the pros and cons of school
librarians being responsible for textbook managment
(inventory, check-in/check-out, etc.) I need to hear
from a middle-school or high-school librarian or media
specialist who is OPPOSED to this idea. Please email
me at scottknickelbine@yahoo.com. Thanks for your
time.
