Using AR guidelines will tell you it is not meant to be a grade but
that students with their teachers' help should set goals based on how
much time then spend reading, what their ZPD is and then using the
goal setting chart that AR does to make those goals. We have done
this from the first and have been successful. We also use the AR
certification process to challenge students to read appropriate
materials and help guide them to those. We still allow them to check
out 'free choice' materials (translate to non AR) which keeps those
who don't like AR happy.
To those out there on the list, please don't start a 'discussion' on
the merits of AR. Some of us like it, some of us hate it, some of us
don't care. The truth of the matter is we have it and thus I support
it. If done correctly it does help kids find books to read; I have
never made the assumption that it will make life long readers...
