I work in a K-8 elementary and several 8th graders participate in a book
club. I recently read "The Devil's Arithmetic" by Jane Yolen with my
own daughter (also an 8th Grader) and we watched the film produced by
Showtime. We both were very moved by the book and movie - which
describes a modern young Jewish girl that is transported back in time to
Poland during world war II and is sent to the death camps with her
family.
My question is this: do you feel that this is too intense of a subject
to share in a book club of 8th graders? So far our book club has read
"The Merlin Conspiracy" and "The Gospel According to Larry" and I get
the feeling the students would like something with a little "edge" to
it.
