Hi all,
This is probably something I should know, but please keep in mind that I
trained as a librarian long before automation and MARC records were common (well,
maybe not long before, but long enough that we only brushed over it in library
school!) We have been automated for some time, and use MARC records from a number
of vendors. We have some records that will list a subject heading, and then tack
on the note (SEARS), but we have others in which the SEARS designation comes first.
This has had the effect of creating an entirely separate listing of our subject
headings at the beginning of our subject list, with subjects starts SEARS AAA
through SEARS ZZZ. Can anybody explain why some subject tracings are done this
way, and how you handle these in your catalogs? And why do I care if a subject
heading is SEARS anyway? I would also be interested in know how much
"standardization" of subject headings you do, since we seem to have them "all over
the map", especially those pesky little "juvenile literature" tracings, which are
ridiculous for us, since everything we have is "juvenile literature." Anyway,
insights will be welcome. Thanks,

        Linda L.
