I read "The Watsons" to our 5th graders each spring. Consistently, they are most
disappointed in the ending. I think what bothers them is (for them) the crying in
the bathroom and the anguish about the unfair parts of life end too abruptly when
he leaves the bathroom and the book ends.
Next week, I am going to ask the students to talk in pairs and devise an ending
they like better. Meanwhile, I'm asking the group: What do you think about the
ending? For those who read the book aloud, do your students complain about the
ending?
