The Indiana University School of Library and Information Science at
Indianapolis in collaboration with the Department of Curriculum and
Instruction, School of Education in Bloomington have established a
partnership to prepare the next generation of leaders for higher
education in School Library Media.

=20

Through this unique partnership, five students receive financial support
to work toward completion of a Ph.D. in Curriculum Studies with special
focus on School Library Media Services.=20

=20

Upon completion of the doctoral degree, these future leaders should be
able to:

* enter the professoriate at institutions of higher
education

* conduct research on effective school library media
and related practices

* prepare school library media specialists to
establish effective, evidence-based programs

=20

>From the beginning of their doctoral studies, students will engage in
formal and informal learning experiences, research projects, policy
analysis exercises, and services to the community and school library
media field. They also will become directly involved as instructors in
the Master's level school library media education program. A central
feature of their residency experience will be an annual summer seminar
in which they will engage selected national researchers.

The Summer Seminar

=20

Each summer, a seminar will be funded for up to 15 additional current
and potential doctoral students in school library media services from
across the country. The goal of the seminar series will be to advance
research leadership and create a network of potential research
collaborators as well as recruit additional doctoral students.=20

=20

The participants, meeting in Bloomington, IN during each summer, will
join with national leaders in school library media and curriculum design
to interact on research projects and research plans. Each week-long
seminar will focus on an in-depth analysis of research accomplished and
discussion of the need to employ specific methods that meet additional
research needs in the field.=20

Stipends for Students

Beginning in January 2005, funding for five students will be provided by
the Institute of Museum and Library Studies. Students accepted into the
program will receive a yearly stipend of $15,000, 20 hours of fee
remission, and health insurance during each of the three years of
funding. Additional support beyond the IMLS funds is possible along
