Hi All--
I received plenty of e-mails asking for a hit if I located an online source
for starred book reviews, but nobody had any info. So I e-mailed Follett's
Customer Service folks, asking if there was a way to generate a list of starred
titles on TitleWave instead of having to look them up one at a time. This
morning, bright and early, I received a phone call from a wonderfully helpful
Follett gal, and she told me that there is indeed a way to use the vast Follett
database to pull up all the starred reviews for the year. WOW!!! She then walked
me through the whole process, and I was able to pull up the 1,000 + books that
have gotten stars this year in Booklist, Horn Book, PW, Kirkus, Kliatt, and
SLJ. I can edit the list and sort it in various ways. I am in HEAVEN!!!
What a boon to the profession that TitleWave site is. And it's free. Amazing.
When I think back to 25+ years as a school librarian, writing out review
cards by hand, trying to keep track of all those reviews, I'm staggered by how
much more efficient we can be nowadays.
Someone suggested I try the B&T website, and they may have similar
capabilities there.
Here, then, is the way to sort reviews in Follett's TitleWave. If you don't
belong yet, it's so easy and so free. Go to www.titlewave.com and click
"register for new account" so you can fill out the form online. Once you've logged
in
with your name and password, you'll see three tabs, like folders, at the top
of the site: LIBRARY, CURRICULUM, and TITLEWISE. Click on LIBRARY.
Under "Collection Development" on the left, click BOOKS.
You'll see KEY WORDS, then AUTHOR, then COPYRIGHT YEARS. Type in the year you
want (2004).
Scroll down to: "Reviews/Awards you require for your books:"
You can just click on one category (Booklist starred), or, press your CONTROL
key on your keyboard (to the left of the space bar on my Mac. Who knows where
they put it on the PC) and click each category you desire (Booklist starred
and Horn Book starred, or whatever you want). You have to hold down the control
button until you've scrolled down the list and highlighted everything your
bookloving heart desires.
Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on SEARCH.
There are all kinds of ways you can tinker with this and refine your search.
Want to see all the fiction books Hornbook starred this year? You can. Select
the interest levels (grade levels), Dewey range or classification (fiction,
biography, etc.). (Use your CONTROL button to select more than one of each
category.) You can even call up a single publisher. (Hmmm. How many Hyperion
picture books got stars this year? How many fiction books about trolls were
published this year? Or last year? See the possibilities here? It's endless! And you
thought e-Bay and Google were trouble. There goes all the rest of your free
time...)
Now, above the booklist you just generated, you'll see an OPTIONS list. Pull
down to "Sort" and sort by title or author or Dewey. Then, if you want to save
your list, pull down and highlight "Select ALL" and then click GO (to the rig
ht of the options bar). Now highlight "Add Wanted Titles to New List" and then
click GO (to the right of the options bar). You'll then be able to name your
list and add any notes you might need.
This is so extremely thrilling to me, I am elated. (I know--I need to get out
more...)
Happy searching.

<< Hi Folks--
I'm working on putting together my year's list of favorite 2004 titles, and
am reading my way through boxes and boxes of new books. I use Follett's
wonderful TitleWave.com to compare and contrast published reviews with my own take
on
each book I read, and it is incredibly helpful. Is there anyplace place
online to find a list of the starred titles from the major children's book review
journals like SLJ, Booklist, Horn Book, PW, and Kirkus each month? I spend so
much time trying to amass these lists into my own database, and I'd love to be
able to find all this info in one place. Thanks for any light you can shed.
