Dear Brenda
I have done something similar in the past, although not with books and I
found the best way to go about all the procedures was to mimic those that
the children will face in a regular election. We filled out electoral
enrolment forms based on the real thing, discovered how candidates were
selected and ordered on the ballot paper and duplicated this process.
Given that you are covering K-6, and elections are about people you might be
best to have them vote for a favourite author, with maybe a winner each for
K-2, 3-4 and 5-6 to cater for all levels. You might even look at the
regulations for candidates - do they have to be US citizens? - and apply
these to the author so there is a need for some research into the author's
background. Perhaps confident readers might nominate their favourite
author and prepare a "campaign speech" about them. This means they will have
to read more than one book. Also gives you a great follow-up display with
all the winners' titles being there to borrow.
Voting forms should also mimic the real thing - it's all great in-context,
real world learning.
Barbara
PS If you are sick of your election campaign, think of those of us in the
national capital of Australia - we have a national election on October 9, a
state election on October 16 as well as all the hype of the US election on
our news every night!
