Readaloud for 4th graders

I have a request from a teacher friend for a suggested start of school read aloud 
for her 4th graders.  Her year long theme this year is going to be along the lines 
of: "Lifetime of Investigations" and "Be a detective."  She would like to kick off 
her them with a related book.  Picture book and chapter book suggestions welcome.

Does anyone have a suggestion for her?
