Thanks to all who responded to my question about Scholastic Book People.
I received a variety of responses - I'll try to summarize.

Most of the responses were from people who hadn't used The Book People
but had a similar arrangement with Books Are Fun (affiliated with with
Readers Digest) or other companies. Overall, teachers and staff
appreciate the service - lots of good gift items, coffee table books,
CDs, etc. Several people commented that the free items from these
companies aren't usually anything they would have chosen for their
collections, but still make good giveaways or door prizes. However,
others commented that they've gotten some great books this way. Several
people also remarked that collecting the money from the teachers can
sometimes be an issue!
