HIT: looking for a title

I have a teacher looking for the title of a book. Here are the elements
she remembers: modern setting, Italian girl moves to a new town to live
with grandfather. Grandfather is grouchy, demeans her, is an alcoholic,
and waves a shotgun at anyone who comes close to the house. When things
begin to get better, the grandfather gives the girl some kind of tooth
(?), and graffiti is a problem. Any ideas????  Thanks for any help you
