Hi all!
Every year I do the Banned Books Week lesson from our library curriculum. I keep
waiting for some parent to complain. This year I purchased the new kit from ALA
because it was time to update the old posters. I had the Captain Underpants and
the Lord of the Rings posters up in the media center during a faculty meeting.
When teachers had left, one teacher came up and told me that one teacher was up set
witht the posters. I replied have that person come in and talk to me, because this
is a subject covered in our curriculum and I would be happy to give that person a
gist of the lesson. About an hour later, my principal came in and looked at the
posters. I asked who complained and she just laughed and said a staff person had
complained but she explained to them that it is part of curriculum. I guess my
thoughts are that I never thought that a teacher would be the first to complain.
the second thought is that that person did not come to me first to check it out. I
would have in!
vited that person to listen to the lesson, even taped it if they couldn't free up
their schedule. final thought is maybe I need to inservice teachers on freedom to
read. Celebrate Banned Books Week. Take a librarian to lunch!
